4 Tips For Driving On Highway

Freeway driving can be challenging for many new drivers, but the reality is that even seasoned motorists are guilty of unsafe driving practices when traveling down the open road. Driving on a freeway or highway takes extra skills and knowledge compared to driving on relatively quiet roads. While it can be overwhelming at first, there are ways for you to conquer this fear.

Here are four important tips that can help you stay safe while driving on the highways in Mississippi.

Abide by The Speed Limit On A Highway

It can be tempting to speed up when all the drivers surrounding you are going above the speed limit. However, just because everyone else is doing it doesn’t mean that you should. Speeding increases your chances of losing control of your vehicle and getting into a serious collision that results in serious injuries. Make sure you are aware of the speed limit on the road you are on, and keep in the right lane if you don’t plan on passing other vehicles.

Understand How To Merge Properly

It’s important that you understand how to safely merge onto the freeway, as this is often the most difficult and frightening part of freeway driving. To merge, pick up speed on the entrance ramp and do several quick glances into the lane in which you will be merging. Turn your blinker on and speed up as you merge between vehicles, but remember to always yield to other drivers since you don’t have the right of way.

Avoid The Highway During Bad Weather

While we know that it’s not always possible, it’s best to avoid driving on the highway when the weather is unfavorable. Bad weather, such as fog or rain, can hinder your visibility and decrease your traction on the road. These factors can increase your risk of a crash. If you do have to drive during inclement weather, ensure that you take steps to increase your visibility. For instance, you should turn your headlights on, clean your headlights regularly, and stay out of blind spots.

Maintain A Safe Following Distance

Tailgating is one of the most common causes of highway accidents. It’s crucial that you always keep a safe buffer between your vehicle and the one in front of you. This way, should highway conditions change, you have time to brake and avoid colliding with the car in front of you. Doing so also allows other cars to maneuver around you and make lane changes. You should always avoid distractions behind the wheel as well, which are notorious for leading to fender benders.
