Why You Should Stay Alert in Work Zones

What influences crash rates in Work Zones?

Hundreds of people die in work zone accidents every year, many of whom are road work employees struck by vehicles. Because of this, National Work Zone Awareness Week was established to encourage drivers to travel safely in work zones and be aware of the workers present.

Several actions can be considered dangerous for work zone driving, and most of them are preventable. Here are some of the most influential factors in work zone accidents and how you can avoid them.

Driving Distracted

Texting and driving or other cellphone use while in a work zone contributes to many accidents every year. In fact, the rate of distracted driving-related fatal crashes is higher in work zones than in non-work zones. As such, several states have implemented laws prohibiting the use of handheld devices while driving in a work zone.

Furthermore, general driver inattention can increase the risk of a severe collision when in these areas. It’s essential to stay alert and eliminate all distractions when traveling in a work zone, especially when workers are present.

Speeding

Those “slow down, workers present” signs you see when approaching a work zone are for everyone’s benefit. In general, it’s a good idea to decrease your speed by 10 mph or more when approaching a work zone unless otherwise posted. Because there are so many moving parts in these areas like workers, machinery, or other vehicles, reducing speeds can be instrumental in reducing both the likelihood and severity of crashes.

Driving While Tired

It’s not uncommon for roadway construction crews to work through the night when fewer people are on the road. However, this can mean that those traveling may be more likely to drive while tired.

Drowsy driving-related crashes are 100% preventable with the right amount and quality of sleep. Before getting behind the wheel, it is essential that you are well-rested.
