About Chatham Gilder Howell Pittman

Injury Law Firm in North Mississippi

Chatham Pittman, PLLC

The Chatham Law Firm has been a leader in serving individuals and families in North Mississippi since the firm was founded by Gerald Weissinger Chatham in 1932. A native son of Hernando, Mr. Chatham served in the Mississippi House of Representatives, as Desoto County Prosecuting Attorney, Desoto County Superintendent of Education, District Attorney for the 17th Judicial District, and on the Board of Trustees for the University of Mississippi. As District Attorney, Mr. Chatham prosecuted the defendants in the infamous Emmett Till murder trial, answering the call of duty and presenting a thorough and vigorous case at trial under difficult circumstances.

His son, Gerald W. Chatham, Sr. also served as the District Attorney for the 17th Judicial District for three terms before returning to the private practice of law. In private practice, Mr. Chatham consistently received the coveted “preeminent” attorney rating, the highest rating bestowed by Martindale-Hubbell®. Mr. Chatham was also a member of the prestigious American Board of Trial Advocates (Abota) having tried over 100 jury trials to conclusion. In 2012, Mr. Chatham was elected as Circuit Judge for the 17th Judicial District serving the same five-county jurisdiction in North Mississippi as his father did. Upon his departure to the bench, Mr. Chatham entrusted the Chatham Law Firm to his law partner and son in-law, Steven W. Pittman, the two having merged their respective law practices in 2005.

Gilder & Howell, PLLC

Upon graduation from law school in 1988, Jamie W. Howell Jr. began practicing law at the Gilder Law Firm, founded in 1967 and headed by the legendary Mid-South trial lawyer and tactician Robert G. “Bob” Gilder. Gilder Law Firm was opened in the Southaven, Mississippi area long before Southaven was incorporated as a city and is the oldest continual law firm in Southaven. Jefferson D. Gilder, the son of Robert G. Gilder, joined his father’s firm in 1990 working alongside Jamie W. Howell Jr. where the two were mentored directly by Mr. Gilder. In 1993, Mr. Howell left Gilder Law Firm to begin a solo practice while Jefferson D. Gilder stayed on as a partner. Gilder & Howell, Attorneys PLLC, was founded in July 2000 upon the passing of Robert G. Gilder on the strong foundation of litigation experience gleaned from their time spent with Mr. Gilder.
